How to Hitch a Ride in the Ocean

Hey Critter Lovers!

I talked to a shark and an octopus about that viral ride-along.

Yes, that one. The octopus riding on the head of a mako shark off the coast of New Zealand — a moment so mysterious and delightful, it caught the attention of marine biologists and ocean lovers around the world.

In my latest YouTube video, I chat with the shark and octopus themselves to hear their side of the story — and what they shared was as surprising as the footage.

Here’s what I learned:

  • It was a mutually supportive, intentional agreement.

  • The shark loved the feeling of the octopus on his head — it gave him resistance training and attracted prey.

  • The octopus enjoyed the ride and got to travel farther than usual.

  • They consider themselves friends — connected, even when apart.

  • And most importantly: they want us to know that when we collaborate across differences, we can go farther together.

Watch the full video to hear their message in their own words:

In addition to being a cute animal moment, the shark and octopus working together serve as a reminder from the ocean about cooperation, interconnection, and the possibilities that open up when we trust and support each other.

What do you think — would you be open to a "sharktopus" style collaboration in your own life?
